What is Inherent Safety?

A process is described as inherently safer if it reduces or eliminates one or more process hazards and this reduction or elimination is accomplished through changes that are permanent and inseparable.Below are strategies for achieving inherent safety:

  • Minimize : Use small quantities of hazardous substances
  • Substitute: Replace a material with a less hazardous substance
  • Moderate: Use less hazardous conditions, a less hazardous form of a material,or facilities, which minimize the impact of a release of hazardous material or energy
  • Simplify: Design facilities which eliminate unnecessary complexity and make operating errors less likely

The above inherent safety principles can be applied to alarm management, security, operations, training, and company goals.Very broadly speaking inherent safety principles can serve as a guide to reducing operational risks. Here are a few examples of application of inherent safety philosophy.
